Extracts from the Edith Durham Letter of August 3, 1919 to Lt. Col. L.S. Amery MP at the House of Commons,
"Ever since February of this year we have been receiving reports of the conduct of the Serb forces now occupying the parts of North Albania. That the report of massacres and violence at Gusinje were true is amply proved by the fact that the Serbs arrested and removed a British officer, Captain Brodie, who hastened to the spot to investigate. We now have the following details from a reliable source:
At Ipec (Pec) Hashid Bey was wounded three times by Serbswho robbed him of 1800 and many cases of clothing. Nazif Bey's house has been plundered. Jaub Aga a mechant of Ipek was murdered in broad daylight. The Serb police assassinated the brothers Hahmed and Amhed Mudadjir and plundered their houses. All the villages of Plava, Gusinje, Vunthai have been razed by the Serb regular army which plundered everything.
Many victims were killed and burned alive. . .
The little village of Radishefca near Mitrovitza has been completely plundered and burnt. Thirty villages of Drenitza have been reduced to cinders. At Istik the Serb soldiers slaughtered in one day 160 individuals and left the corpses to putrify in the open air. At Jablanika they murdered the Imam of the mosque, Mullah Halil Jara and two old men.
The village of Zlekukan was inhabited by Albanian Catholics as were also thirty small villages in the neighbourhood, which have all been plundered, many people murdered anda number of children thrown into the fire. . .
That the Serbs are capable of extirpating the whole Albanian population both Christian and Moslem, if allowed to retain these lands, is only too certain. We have the names and qualifications of the guilty Serbs. We call on you in the name of justice and the rights of nations, to demand at least that
strict enquiry be made into these circumstances and above all to protest against any further Albanian territory being handed over to Serbia. . ."
